Police Dog Training:
Prerequisites and Procurement Process

Police dog training is a specialized job. Police dog training is a combination of socialization, agility training, endurance training, and special skills training.

Making a police dog acclimatized to city life is prerequisite of training process.

This is necessary because if the police dog is nervous around people how can you expect him to perform the special tasks.

Police dog training is a rigorous process where the trainers and handlers work hand in hand to train the dog for highly skilled and demanding police duties.

Prerequisites of Police Dog Training

Police dog training involves training of a particular breed/ breeds because not all dog breeds are suitable for the police dog role.

German Shepherds comprise a majority of police dogs. Some other dog breeds such as Labrador, Golden retriever, Doberman, Malinois also receive police dog training for consummating special tasks suitable for these breeds.

The police dogs should have traits such as intelligence, strength, endurance, aggression and an enhanced sense of smell. Police dog training involves augmentation and refinement of these traits.

Most of the police dogs are males. Police dog owners and trainers prefer not to neuter the police dogs because they like to retain the natural aggression of the dogs.

However, police dog training process involves selective aggression control training to keep the aggression within manageable limits. Methodical and rigorous training are some steps to ensure aggressiveness control.

Sources for Procuring Police Dogs

Police dog trainers procure their dogs from different sources. In some cases, the dog owners donate their dogs to police. However, the most popular way of getting a police dog is to get one that is bred specially for this purpose.

These dogs have better performances during police dog training sessions and eventually turn out to be good police dogs.

Most of the American Police dog units prefer to import their police dogs from European countries.

This eases the job of police job training because the breed standards in Europe are very strict and they get good dogs that are specially bred, groomed and trained for police duties.

European Police dog agencies are renowned and preferred because the dog undergoes rigorous training regimen before reaching America. This special quality of European police dogs and minimal training requirements justifies their high import costs.

Most of the times the police dogs themselves pay for their cost and expenses incurred for police dog training. There are many examples where predecessor police dogs have earned huge rewards for drug hauls and the same money goes towards procurement of their successors.
